Set in 1800 New Orleans, Vodú tells the story of a young woman who unravels family secrets amidst the rituals of Africa. Alongside a diverse cast, including a wise elder, a rival, a scavenging conjurer, and a conflicted priest, the show presents themes of betrayal, love, and healing within an evocative time in history.

George Purefoy Tilson

George Purefoy Tilson is a Maryland-based playwright, librettist and composer. With over 16 plays including Rudy Doo which won first place production in the 2007 Baltimore Playwrights
Festival.

 

Baltimore City Paper said: “Tilson’s comic ear is subtle and his dialogue witty. The combination
of dark humor, unforgettable characters and random encounters make the 90 minutes go by quickly.” Broadwayworld.com: “It is one of the best plays of the Festival. An emotionally powerful piece of theater.”
 

Vodu -- for which George wrote both book and lyrics -- was first presented in 2000 as a song cycle at New York Theatre Workshop, directed by Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, Dear Evan Hansen). It was subsequently produced off-Broadway by the Harlem Repertory Theatre at Aaron Davis Hall in 2004.

Janelle A. Robinson

For the past thirty years, Janelle A. Robinson has enjoyed a professional career on the operatic and musical theater stage as well as in the classroom and recently began directing.

 

Janelle (co-librettist), who originated the role of Claudette Vareilles in Vodu in the NYTW presentation and is working to revise the production.

In 2014, Janelle received the Connecticut Critic’s Choice award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Bloody Mary in STONC’s production of South Pacific. Other awards include The Richard Tucker Study Grant and the MacAllister Award for her operatic work.
 

Janelle’s credits include the Broadway production of Cameron Mackintosh and Disney’s Mary
Poppins in which she originated the role of Mrs. Corry; Oklahoma, also produced by Cameron
Mackintosh and directed by Trevor Nunn; and Hal Prince and Susan Stroman’s revival of Showboat.
